Expect fireworks this weekend as the fighting game community journeys to Illinois for a tournament of epic proportions. Along with games such as Street Fighter 5, Super Smash Brothers, and Killer Instinct, Injustice 2 is making its first significant appearance on the tournament scene with a $20,000 dollar pot bonus. There are currently 367 registered participants expected to appear at Combo Breaker this weekend, and this includes players from the United States as well as overseas. With the game in its infancy, expect the unexpected as unseen and undiscovered characters will shine. There is a lot to look forward to this weekend with so much at stake for these players. Here’s a brief list of players expected to take part in the competition;
From what I know personally, the Galloping Ghost Arcade is located in Brookfield, IL, and it houses one of the most dominant fighting game teams in the world. With the likes of PimPimJim, 16 Bit, Jeremiah, HAN, Wafflez, Dizzy, Max, and more, Team GGA has had success at several tournaments across many different fighting games. The GGA team has helped to grow the Injustice and Mortal Kombat community immensely. Behind the scenes their sponsors work hard to sustain their business. It’s time to help support the arcade that paved the way of opportunity for these high level players. I do not know much of the arcade itself, but what I do know is that the employees are friendly and that the arcade is massive. The fact that the arcade is looking to expand is inspiring because arcades are few and far between in the present-day. Here is a quote taken directly from the KickStarter page that will provide more background information about the cause:
“The GALLOPING GHOST ARCADE opened on Friday, August 13, 2010, with a collection of 130 games. We offered all day entry for only $15. Many of the arcade cabinets were rescued from the verge of destruction and restored for everyone to enjoy. Now that we have been open for more than three years, we offer more than 400 arcade games and are possibly the largest arcade in the world. Gamers travel from around the world to come play the arcade titles that many thought they would never see again, as well as to participate in unique events. We offer so much to the people who play here and we continuously strive to to make the place better. We are looking to everyone in the community to help us grow into the gaming utopia we hope to become. We thank you for all your support and help in making this happen.”
The Galloping Ghost Arcade has put forth a lot of effort for the classic arcade scene, which is a scene that has been dying out for the past few years. This, coupled with the incredibly entertaining Injustice Ghost Battle Series, are enough reason to make a small donation to GGA. Help them expand, because without them there would really be no reason for arcade lovers all over the world to care. Without arcades, the world would be filled with people gaming from a very limited standpoint and would provide no hope for people who want to play the classic games that we all miss. Arcades encourage gaming diversity, and even the smallest donation helps. Maybe one day you will be able to make it out to the Galloping Ghost Arcade to see the hard work that has been put into an establishment dedicated to the origins of gaming.

Earlier today MLG announced via Twitter that passes for Injustice: Gods Among Us and Killer Instinct would go on sale at 5 P.M. ET. This post is to inform all of my Injustice and fighting game readers that the passes are, in fact, now on sale. Below I will keep a comprehensive list of entrants for both games up until the event. Also I will provide the links that you can follow to buy your pass. The ultimate goal here is to reach the 128-player cap that MLG has set. This would encourage Major League Gaming to keep fighting games around and prove that the Injustice and Killer Instinct players deserve this recognition.

We here at Make Plays, Not Excuses thoroughly enjoy Injustice: Gods Among Us. We enjoy it so much, that we are going to be hosting an online tournament with prizes to be won. This tournament is FREE TO ENTER. I haven’t quite decided what the tournament will cap out at, but it will likely cap out at 24 players. This tournament is open to anyone who plays Injustice and wants to gain some experience in an online tournament setting. Here are the rules for the tournament as it stands.
- Best 2 out of 3 due to the length of time it will take.
- Open to players of the United States and Canada only.
- Connection complaints are ill-advised.
- Double random stage select.
- Winners are character locked.
- Losers can either switch characters, or do another double random stage select.
- This tournament will operate on the honor system when reporting a match.
- To be safe, it is recommended that players take picture proof of a win in case of any foul play.
- If a match is disputed by both players and no proof is provided, I will sit in on a king of the hill match and that will decide the winner.
- Since it is free to play, this tournament will be unseeded.
Brackets will be created via Challonge and a stream is not in place to this point. If a streamer wants to participate they are more than welcomed and it would be greatly appreciated. Here are the prizes for the top three placements in this tournament:
- 1st Prize will receive $15 dollars via PayPal, a spot in the Make Plays, Not Excuses Hall of Fame, and will receive priority seeding for future MPNE tournaments.
- 2nd Prize will receive a PAX code of your choice and priority seeding for future MPNE tournaments.
- 3rd Prize will receive a PAX code of your choice and priority seeding for future MPNE tournaments.
The date right now is set to be this Saturday, April 26th starting @ 9 PM Eastern. However a vote will be held on a Test Your Might thread to gauge whether people would rather the tournament be this weekend or next weekend. Any other questions will also be answered in that thread.
Now before I begin my list, I’m going to set the stage for all who continue reading this article. I’ve been following fighting games, primarily NetherRealm Studios games, since MLG Columbus 2012. This is where my passion for fighting games grew exponentially. Some people are born to play fighting games. I am not one of these people and it didn’t take me long to accept that. You can catch me supporting my local scene and trying to earn wins, but in no way am I an even serviceable Injustice player. I tend to think of myself as more of a professional spectator. In the past I have interviewed many of the top Mortal Kombat players, and I like to think that I know what I’m talking about.
Despite it being a year old, Injustice: Gods Among Us is still a new game. Players will develop and earn their recognition. The incoming list is one-hundred percent my opinion. That is not to say I do not expect criticism, because I do. I am welcoming all who view this list to call me out on my personal opinion. I’ve taken many aspects of Injustice and tournament history into consideration when constructing this list. This list is not created with the purpose of offending any of the top players within the Injustice scene.
